Almost two thirds of people questioned are planning to stop using public transport in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic according to Motorpoint.
A new web-based survey by the UK’s largest independent car retailer, which has a network of branches across England, Scotland and Wales, found 60.2 per cent of people wouldn’t be returning to the buses, trains or trams in the future. Over 630 people took part in the poll on the Motorpoint website – www.motorpoint.co.uk.
The results of the poll come as the Government continues to urge people to only use public transport as a last resort wherever possible and instead cycle, walk or drive in an effort to limit the chances of a resurgence of COVID-19 through the use of the buses, trains or trams among others.
Mark Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer of Motorpoint, said: “While the Government urges people to avoid public transport wherever possible in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, for many that isn’t a realistic option and the challenge moving forward for transport providers will be finding practical solutions that keeps our buses, trains and trams moving but passengers safe at the same time.
“However, for those people who don’t plan to use public transport, Motorpoint is in a position to help with a wide range of low mileage, nearly new cars available from over 30 different manufacturers with monthly costs that in many cases will be the same cost, if not less, than a monthly travel pass. This is reflected in the types of cars that customers are currently searching for on our website, with environmentally and economically-friendly superminis such as the Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Nissan Micra, Toyota Aygo and Volkswagen Up among the most popular, as commuters look for cost-effective alternatives to their current mode of transport.”
Motorpoint, which has over 5,000 low mileage, nearly new cars and light commercial vehicles in stock from over 30 different manufacturers, successfully re-opened all of its branches in England on Monday, June 1.
And, as part of its safeguarding process in light of COVID-19, customers will be able to test drive cars unaccompanied while all vehicle collections will be contactless and completed in specially designated areas to guarantee social distancing at all times. Motorpoint is also continuing to operate its hugely popular free home delivery service covering the whole of the UK mainland for those customers who would prefer not to visit the branch, backed by its 14 day hassle free, money back guarantee.
