From Parachutes to 321mph: How Far Santa Pod Has Come
Sixty years ago, “Cars so fast, they need parachutes to stop them” was the slogan Santa Pod Raceway used to announce its arrival on the British motor racing scene. Parachutes remain vital braking equipment to this day – and for good reason.
While conventional brakes have improved beyond measure, so have dragstrip speeds. Late-1960s dragsters astonished crowds with finish-line speeds approaching 160mph. Today, the track record stands at a breathtaking 321mph – reached from a standing start in just 3.7 seconds — performance figures that would have exceeded the most fevered imagination when Santa Pod first opened.
Santa Pod at 60: A Year-Round Racing and Entertainment Venue
