McLaren Automotive has unveiled the Spectrum Theme, an innovative multi-tone paint finish, exclusively for its new 750S, the lightest and most powerful series-production supercar. This striking paintwork is the creation of McLaren Special Operations (MSO), McLaren’s bespoke personalisation service.

The Spectrum Theme represents a new generation of McLaren paint specialism, requiring the development of novel techniques to offer customers a truly unique and revolutionary product.

The Spectrum Theme is more technically advanced than any previous MSO development, mirroring the extensive technical changes seen in the 750S. The precision-crafted tonal shift of separate colour shades creates an optical illusion of light to dark within each stripe, giving a sense of speed and acceleration, even when the 750S is stationary.

Introducing the Exquisite McLaren Spectrum Theme

Michael McDonagh, Director of McLaren Special Operations, said, “The Spectrum Theme elevates what we can achieve at McLaren. The lines of the Spectrum are meticulously designed to complement the 750S’s exceptional bodywork, and the new techniques we’ve developed are perfectly aligned with the 750’s technical advancements. The increasing complexity of what we can offer to customers, through themes like Spectrum, showcases the remarkable expertise of our paint technicians at MSO.”

The Spectrum is available in three variants – Spectrum Blue, Spectrum Grey, and Spectrum Orange. These can be further personalised with vibrant leather trim, a custom dedication plaque, and extended visual carbon fibre door sills featuring hand-painted Spectrum graded effect MSO logos.

The Blue, Grey, and Orange themes are just the start; Spectrum can also be customised with unique colourways by MSO. Creating the shades in the colour-spectrum requires formulating new paints that perfectly balance light and dark tones to create a seamless colour shift. Each Spectrum Theme requires custom blends to achieve the desired effect.

The placement of the Spectrum lines was a particular challenge for the MSO technicians due to the intricate aerodynamic sculpting of the dihedral doors. The Spectrum Theme also includes a nod to the popular Velocity Theme offered by MSO at the rear of the car. The seventh paint shade is a gentle Velocity fade that wraps around the back of the 750S. The Blue theme transitions from Spectrum Blue to Metallic Aurora Blue, the Orange theme starts with Spectrum Orange and builds to a vibrant Gamma Red Metallic, and the Grey variant shifts from Spectrum Grey to Metallic Meteorite Grey. As a final touch, the underside of the Active Rear Wing of the 750S can be finished in a contrasting colour.
